Chronic insomnia is more complicated than regular insomnia and is usually a result of different factors. Chronic insomnia can sometimes be due to a physical incapability or due to an underlying mental disorder. The most common cause of chronic insomnia is depression. Physical causes may include arthritis, asthma, Parkinson’s disease or apnea. Other causes of chronic insomnia may be due to behavioural reasons like substance abuse of caffeine or alcohol. Disturbed sleep and wake cycles may be caused by night time activities and stress.
Causes of chronic insomnia can also include health conditions, physical pain and distress. Medical conditions that can sometimes cause difficulty of sleeping are hypertension, allergies and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
A huge percentage of chronic insomnia cases have been linked to serious psychological cases. Typically, insomnia is caused by bipolar disorder, depression or anxiety. More than half of depressed people claim to be experiencing insomnia. Depression specifically, has been found to be associated with irregular stress hormone levels that can affect sleep.
Hormones Can Be The Cause Too
The rise and fall of female hormones may also be responsible for insomnia in women. The hormone progesterone helps promote sleep and levels of this may fall during a woman’s menstruation period which leads to insomnia and rise during ovulation, when women may feel sleepiness. Pregnant women also experience some changes in their sleep pattern during their firat and last trimester when their hormones vary intensely. Insomnia can also be experienced by women during their first phase of menopause. Aging can also bring about insomnia since it is also linked with dulling of the growth hormones, which are also associated with sleep.
