Sleep Apnea and Insomnia

Sleep apnea is generally defined as a disorder in which pauses in breathing called apnea lasts for a certain period resulting to missed breaths while sleeping. Difficulty in breathing during sleep is a critical condition. Since it occurs while the person sleeps, the person may not be able to adjust his/her breathing pattern to its normal state. The worst that may happen is death. Difficulty in breathing is also a major discomfort and thus it can disrupt sleep. Sleep apnea and insomnia are linked disorders. 

Symptoms

A common symptom of sleep apnea is snoring. It is the term to describe the sound of air passing through the back of the mouth, throat and nose. Note however that not all people who snore experience a difficulty in breathing or suffer from sleep apnea. The most indicative sign of sleep apnea is when the snoring stops along with the breathing. This usually occurs for a minimum of ten seconds. As breathing resumes, the person gasps deeply before snoring again. Usually, the patient is not aware of this disruption in breathing. S/he can only be made aware of the disorder by another person. Sleep apnea and insomnia can be experienced hand in hand. A person with apnea may be the cause of insomnia of the other individual.

The Cure

To cure sleep apnea and insomnia, causes have to be determined initially as in the treatment of all kinds of ailments.  Treatment of sleep apnea requires the installation of devices like the continuous positive airway device (CPAP) which keeps the patient’s airway open to facilitate proper breathing. Treatment for insomnia can be done through non-drug methods or by intake of medications.
