Herbal Treatment for Insomnia

When diagnosed, there are a number of treatments for insomnia. Aside from usual medications, herbal treatment for insomnia is rather popular and effective. There are also a lot of prescription medicines that can relieve insomnia readily. However, most people still prefer herbal treatments to over-the-counter medicines because of the lesser possibility for side effects and chemical dependence. More common herbal remedies for insomnia include plants.

Plants that are known to relieve symptoms of insomnia include: valerian root, dog wood, passion flower and Californian poppy.

Valerian Root

Valerian root is a very common herb that is known for its comforting and relaxing effect, making it more known as nature’s valium. Parents who have hyperactive children are known to use this for treatment of their children.
The advantage of herbal treatment of insomnia is that the side effects and the possibility of getting dependent on the drug are minimal. Herbal treatments do not have hang-overs like other prescription medications. Their safety could not be questioned and they are also not habit-forming.

Chamomile

Chamomile is another herb that is commonly used to treat insomnia, usually in tea forms. Chamomile tea is normally taken just prior to bedtime in order to make the body relaxed and to get ready for a good night’s sleep.

Lavender

Lavender is also an herb that is commonly used to get the same relaxing results. Lavender oil is even used on pillows, sheets and blankets. The relaxing effect of lavender is what most patients prefer over other medications. Plants which have similar effects with lavender and chamomile are passion flower and other herbs.
