Common Causes of Insomnia in Adults

Insomnia is the condition in which a person experiences difficulty in falling asleep and in staying asleep or in both. Anyone can experience insomnia at some point in their lives: babies awake in the middle of the night when they are hungry; children find it difficult to sleep during their respective bed times because of watching late tv; adults spend more hours doing work. However, insomnia seems to be more prevalent among adults. This article enumerates some of the common causes of insomnia in adults.

Stress is one of the major causes of insomnia in adults. Coping with the demands of modern life require being dynamic and always exuding the best self. Sometimes though, irregular work schedules and an overwhelming workload disrupt the normal flow of bodily functions and as a result sleeping patterns change gradually. Physical stress also leads to mental stress like anxiety and depression which cause restlessness at night time.

Physical pain resulting from illnesses is another cause of insomnia. While sleeping the body assumes the most comfortable position to maximize relaxation. Sometimes as the body turns, the person accidentally puts pressure on an injured part and causes awakening. Disruption of sleep also arises from the discomfort caused by asthma attacks and other diseases.
