Chronic Insomnia Treatment

There are three parts to chronic insomnia treatment:

  1. Diagnosis and treatment of essential medical or psychological conditions
  2. Identification of behaviour that could worsen insomnia and reducing if not eliminating them.
  3. Using sleeping pills for a certain duration of time.

A person who is taking sleeping pills should submit himself to a medical professional to closely monitor the effectiveness and to decrease its side effects. Sleeping pills should be taken at its lowest dose and for the shortest span of time needed to relieve the sleeplessness symptoms. In stopping the use of sleeping pills, one must also do it gradually for when stopped immediately, it might cause recurrence of insomnia.

Doctors may try behavioural techniques for treating chronic insomnia. Behavioural techniques include: relaxation therapy, bright light, sleep restriction and reconditioning.

Bright Light

If a person experiences difficulty in getting some sleep early at night, it will help him to wake up at the same time every morning and then try to get a lot of bright light in the morning. This is said to reset the internal clock to a much earlier time at night for sleeping.

Relaxation Therapy

This technique is said to be effective in distracting a person’s mind from racing thoughts by reducing or maybe eliminating anxiety and body tension. It may take some time to practice the techniques involved here and to achieve rest and relaxation.

Reconditioning

This is another chronic insomnia treatment that doctors may suggest to people with insomnia. The treatment involves conditioning a person’s mind with the use of his bed. A person is said to do nothing else on his bed but sleep. His bed must be associated with sleep only and nothing else.
