Chronic insomnia medication involves:
- Diagnosis and treatment of primary medical and psychological troubles.
- Identification of behaviours that could aggravate sleeplessness and reducing or eliminating them.
- Receive medications that could help patients sleep although using sleeping pills for a long time is controversial.
A patient who decides to take sleeping pills should surrender himself to the supervision of a medical professional to constantly monitor the effectiveness and then reduce the side effects, if there are any. Usually, these drugs should be prescribed at their lowest doses and for the shortest time possible needed to alleviate the symptoms related to sleep. For some medications, the dose can be slowly lowered while discontinuing since stopping it abruptly can trigger insomnia to recur for some nights again.
Other techniques used to improve sleep are relaxation therapy and sleep restriction.
Relaxation therapy is an effective technique to decrease or eliminate distress and body tension. Consequently, a person’s thoughts can stop “racing”, the muscles tend to relax and then rest and sleep can happen. It generally takes some time to practice learning the techniques to achieve the desired goals of relaxation.
In sleep restriction, first, it only allows a few hours of sleep at night. The time for sleep is increased slowly until the patients get a normal night’s sleep.
Another chronic insomnia medication which is deemed effective is reconditioning. In reconditioning, patients are taught to associate their bed with sleep. This would mean using the bed strictly for sleep. Other experts do not allow their patients to have sex on their beds as this can cause performance anxiety which could lead to insomnia. So, a person is advised to go to bed only when they feel sleepy. Eventually, a person will be conditioned to feel sleepy once he sees his bed.
